Q: What does 720p and 1080i mean on the box?
A: 720p is 720 lines of progressive scan whereas 1080i is 1080 lines of interlaced scan, the latter taking two scans to achieve. An LCD TV described as “HD” ready has an LCD panel with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels therefore the max lines it can resolve is 768.  Genuine HD transmissions from the BBC HD are aimed at full HD LCD panels as described below:

“Many of the more recent HD Ready flat screens feature a resolution of 1,366x768 pixels. This will display the commonly used 720p and 1080i formats, although 1080i/1080p signals will be downscaled to fit. To display 1080i/1080p signals in their entirety, you'll need a screen with a resolution of 1,920x1,080 pixels, coined 'Full HD' by the marketing men”.
