Part of this preparation should include the removal of moss, thatch and weeds, all of which will stunt healthy grass-growth, reduce the effectiveness of any lawn feed or top dressing you apply as well as restricting water-penetration and good aeration.

Aerating and collecting by hand can be effective but if you have a large lawn, it can be back-breaking, hard work. Electric aerators are good, but again, if you have a large lawn, the chances are your power cable won’t reach.
